Buenos Aires (1974)
In 1973 I photographed the return to power of President Peron, his birthday celebration and his funeral in 1974. And the return of the remains of Argentina’s beloved Eva Peron, his second wife. President Juan Perón passed away on July 1, 1974. On July 2, his body was brought to the National Congress for public viewing. Initially scheduled for 24 hours, the viewing period was extended to 46 hours due to the immense attendance. Over one hundred fifty thousand people braved the cold and rain to pay their final respects to the President. Hundreds of people collapsed from exhaustion and fainted from emotional stress. More than 2000 journalists, from all over the world, covered the funeral. Here are some of the images I took on those momentous occasions.
