Chile: Santiago, 1974. Portraits of a ‘población’. (shanty town)
During the few years that President Allende had been at the head of government, life for the poor of Chile had improved, most of them were now getting three meals a day. This had come to an abrupt stop when General Pinochet took over on September 11, 1973. But like in all the ‘poblaciónes’ I’ve photographed in South America, the children did not know any better and smiled, though hungry.
