After September 11, 1973, over 3000 men and women were ‘disappeared’ by the ruling military junta, leaving many children without parents. And the dream of a better future for the underprivileged had ‘gone up in smoke’. Many families could no longer afford to feed their children, and it was usually the boys who had to take care of themselves: they could be found downtown, around Santiago’s central market and under bridges.
